| Customer Reviews: A highly recommended textbook for either classroom curriculums or self-instruction September 13, 2009 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Geographic information system (GIS) technology is now ubiquitous across the globe. The sequel to "GIS Tutorial: Workbook for ArcView 9", this second volume, "GIS Tutorial II: Spatial Analysis Workbook" focuses on how to perform spatial analysis using the tools in ArcGIS Desktop. Thoroughly 'user friendly', detailed, step-by-step procedures will help guide the reader through a number of spatial analysis methods ranging including comparison, overlay, density, proximity; and statistical, to temporal, distribution, pattern, cluster, auto correlation, and hot spot factors. In addition to the step-by-step instructions, each individual tutorial exercise, also features a review, study questions, and a list of possible real-world applications. Author David Allen draws upon his years of experience and expertise as the GIS manager for the City of Euless, Texas where he designs data structures and custom applications, and as a GIS instructor at the Tarrant county College helping to develop a GIS degree program to make "GIS Tutorial II: Spatial Analysis Workbook" completely user friendly and an ideal, highly recommended textbook for either classroom curriculums or a self-instruction manual.
GIS Tutorial II Spatial Analysis Workbook April 19, 2010 Sunny Lindsey (Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I started using this book about 2 months ago. I am a daily ArcMap user and I found several new methods and tricks to improve my workflow as well as ideas to expand my analyses. The chapters concerning distribution and patterns made what could be a complicated process easy to understand and follow. I have also had my intern working out of the first few chapters to increase her skill set and knowledge. So I have found that both an experienced user and a novice can follow the tutorials and gain a new perspective for your data. The step by step instructions are clear and concise without feeding the user every little crumb. This book fills the gap between entry level and more complex analyses.
super for the self taught! November 17, 2009 Lori Fleming (Irving Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book for those of us self teaching ourselves. Possibly not as good as the first tutorial - but deals with different subject matter. This is a relatively inexpensive way to pick up things you would never know.

Good overview August 16, 2009 William F. Goedecke III (san francisco) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book provides a good overview of the spatial analysis tools in ArcGIS 9.3. I was looking for a little more information on how to work with raster; the book is mostly vector oriented. But pretty good book anyway - provides plenty of exercises with relevant datasets. You should know the basic layout of ArcGIS and how to do basic maps. However, the first section of the book assumes that the reader does not know much more than that; this can be tedious for anyone with a more that a beginners background.
