Product Description A programmable logic controllers (PLC) is a real-time system optimized for use in severe conditions such as high/low temperatures or an environment with excessive electrical noise. This control technology is designed to have multiple interfaces (I/Os) to connect and control multiple mechatronic devices such as sensors and actuators.
Programmable Logic Controllers, Fifth Edition, continues to be a straight forward, easy-to-read book that presents the principles of PLCs while not tying itself to one vendor or another. Extensive examples and chapter ending problems utilize several popular PLCs currently on the market highlighting understanding of fundamentals that can be used no matter the specific technology. Ladder programming is highlighted throughout with detailed coverage of design characteristics, development of functional blocks, instruction lists, and structured text. Methods for fault diagnosis, testing and debugging are also discussed. This edition has been enhanced with new material on I/Os, logic, and protocols and networking.
For the UK audience only: This book is fully aligned with BTEC Higher National requirements.
*New material on combinational logic, sequential logic, I/Os, and protocols and networking *More worked examples throughout with more chapter-ending problems *As always, the book is vendor agnostic allowing for general concepts and fundamentals to be taught and applied to several controllers

A succinct but comprehensive introduction to PLCs February 13, 2008 Terrance R. Banach (Sherman CT USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bolton does a great job with an intro to PLCs. The book is great for a comprehensive introduction to PLCs. I needed inexpensive, yet solid course material, for an adult ed course. This book has been perfect for providing easy to digest material for folks who need familiarity with PLCs.
Covers all the basics February 15, 2009 R. Clemons This book covers all the basics you will need to know if you have no previous PLC experience.
It is a bit "basic" for me because I have dealt with PLCs in the past. Still, it offers some good explanations of what the different programming terms mean.
I would recommend it to someone who knows nothing about PLCs but it may be too "simple" for the journeyman PLC programmer.
Good Book with many mistakes September 4, 2004 G. Owens 32 out of 32 found this review helpful
This is a great book for beginning PLC programmers, but there are numerouse errors throughout the book which cause confusion when trying to understand the use of Internal Relays, Timers and Counters. Use caution and refer back to the text when completing the tests at the end of each section and when reading about how some ladder logic is functioning, I noticed miss-labled Inputs.
Very good for getting your feet wet with plc's December 2, 1998 30 out of 31 found this review helpful
This is a very good introduction for those who have no personal experience with plc's. It does not focus on one brand, but introduces the reader to various manufacturers and the way each functions in comparison to each other. It is great for understanding the capabilities of PLC's. Further information is needed to learn to program and design with plc's.
Excellant introduction to programmable logic controllers! July 6, 1998 31 out of 34 found this review helpful
This book is an excellant text for anyone just starting out or just wanting to brush up on programmable logic controllers. The content and layout of the information was very good. It made it easy to start with the basics and work up to the more complex operations. I especially liked that the book did not focus on one particular brand name of controller, but mentioned each brand and included many program examples of all the major brands. The only drawback I found was that there seemed to be a lot of evident errors and misprints witht the text. Some are obvious such as incorrect numbering, while others I caught by asking questions of experienced individuals. I liked the fact that each chapter included a set of chapter review questions, but once again there seemed to be many misprints and incorrect answers. I only wish that the publisher would have checked closer for the misprints.
